The photos for this year have been uploaded at a reduced size of 1280 x 853 pixels (approx 800KB each). That's probably good enough resolution to view & enjoy the photos. I've reduced these to save space (we're only allowed 1GB of free space on Picasa). The original photos are much larger at 3888 x 2592 (4 to 5MB each). NOTE: The Team Photos are all at Full Resolution.

Downloading photos / Ordering Prints
All the photos are downloadable. If you see a few photos you particularly like and would like them at full resolution, let me know & I'll email them to you, or post them somewhere temporary for you to download. You will notice an Order Prints button. This allows you to select a bunch of photos to order prints of. It's not as slick as it could be, but it can be done. Again, it's best to order prints at full resolution, so let me know & I'll upload them at full res for you to order prints of.

Tri-nations (of sorts), festivals, time-keeping, and mid-week training....

We played some great rugby last week against Maidenhead and Basingstoke in the mini-triangular tournament over in Maidenhead. It was good to get some high quality match practice against some serious opposition; however I think all the Camberley coaches agreed at the end that it would have been good to have done some skills / development work too, as opposed to just matches. Both A's and B's competed well, and our development continues.....

It was a shame the club decided to cancel Windsor today (4th) but understandable. Can I however say a huge thanks to the parents and kids who turned up to play today in the miserable conditions (who said spring is coming!). It shows true commitment to turn up and play in situations like this, and it is always noted.... I think we had a good session in the end - it wasn't pretty (see photo), but if you watch any senior match in these conditions, the game changes completely, at all levels and age groups, and it can be a real hard graft, "stick it up your jumper" effort, with little flow or pace. But here's the reality check - they will play games like that EVERY SEASON so best get used to it!

I made a couple of points at the end of the session, which I want to reiterate here, for those who didn't attend.

1) Time-keeping. I know we all have those Sunday mornings where you wonder why you opened that last bottle on the Sat night, but pls pls can you try and get down the club for 9.55am for registration, to start at 10.00am sharp. It is incredibly disruptive for the coaches if there is a drift in of, well it could have been up to 10 players this morning, between 10.00 and 10.20. It means we are constantly having to pull a coach out to get the kids warmed up and stretched, and what I may do moving forward, is if kids turn up after 1005, they can wait until 1030 when a coach will free him/herself up for warm up. I WON'T LET THEM PLAY WITHOUT BEING STRETCHED OFF AND WARMED UP, but with a limited number of coaches, neither will I hold back the kids who do arrive on time from getting on with it...

2) Surrey Festivals. Please reply to Pippa (cc myself) on availability for BOTH festivals. At the moment, I don't have enough to field a squad for either, so I'm not far from cancelling which would be awful. So please let us know then we can plan it in, and also get the required parental help to make the B festival (hosted by Camberley) happen. I also think it would be good if the A's, when we do select, can come and cheer on the B's, as we are at home, but we will sort that out later.

3) Mid-week Training. We are back training this Wednesday (7th) at Watchetts at 6.45pm. We did this before Xmas, and the sessions were invaluable. It's a great opportunity to do more skills work with the kids, and those who attended regularly last year, really seemed to push on tremendously well with their development. We shut down at 8pm. so in reality it's an extra hour for them.

FESTIVALS

Camberley RFC is hosting the Surrey Development Festival on Sunday 15th
April. The following week (22nd April) the Surrey A Festival is at Dorking.

The Development Festival is for B Teams (for those of you who didn't know).

There are 10 clubs participating, so it will go on all day

As we are the hosts for the 15th April, I shall need lots of help on that
day running the U9s part of the festival. (I will be there for the first
hour or so, but my youngest is five on the 15th, and I shall have to at
least turn-up at her party) We shall need a referee, first aid, parking
attendants, pitch marshals etc. and also someone bossy who can take over
from me. Please start thinking about whether you can help and what you can
do - I know it is during the Easter Hols, so some of you will be away. I
know ALSO that until the teams are picked help will be thin on the ground.
Please, therefore, let me know what your availability is for these dates.
No child can play in both festivals.

It will be £6.00 for each child to play in either festival and I will be
collecting the money over the next few weeks - again, if I haven't had the
money, your child will not be allowed to play. The club will be collecting
the money from me prior to the event - so I need an indication of numbers,
and your dosh.

Sunday 18th v Drifters (and a question for you to answer!)

Hi all,

We had a really good session with Drifters on Sunday and I thought the match we played at the end was of as high quality as I've seen this season. Rucking, mauling, tackling, and some great open running and support play - I think the team is starting to do a lot of things naturally, as opposed to having to think to hard about everything, and that is a credit to them all.

We won the match 3-0, which was pretty much a fair reflection in the end. It could have been more had we not thrown possession away 2 or 3 times in the first half - one of the area the coaches want to work on as we progress.

I'd like to say a very big thanks to all the kids who volunteered to play with the Drifters boys yesterday - they were very low in numbers due to half term - and they are Ben (E), Josh, Harry, Cameron, and Robin. It was great to see (and commented on by Drifters) how well our boys integrated and played as a team with the Drifters lads, despite never having met them before. I don't think there is any higher accolade at this level, and please thank all those named above again from me - they are a credit to our club.

And now a question - We've had a bit of debate over the weekend about selection policy. This comes up regularly particularly around the "A" and "B" situation. I'd like to think we've almost cracked this one, and I believe that almost all our regular boys have had a run out with both A and B teams at one point or another throughout the season (but feel free to comment).

The question now is more around positions. As a rule, we are trying to teach the kids the basics of rugby in an open, enjoyable and above all, safe environment. To do this, we watch the kids through all skills sessions, how they have developed, how they play in games and then give them positions where they can excel and we can meet the main objective above.

I do think as we progress, we want the kids to get exposed to a variety of positions, but I would say we need to be realistic in our expectations - I'm not sure if we trained every day for the next 3 months, that every child would understand every position!!
But again, I want this to be fun, so (and after all this wind) here is the question...

Are you / your child happy with this policy and indeed the positon they are playing or do you/they have a burning desire to be positioned somewhere else?? Keep it simple! If you have a child who is constantly in the backs but fancies a run out in the forwards, that's the kind of thing I'd like to know.

It's only by getting input from you that we can make these decisions, or at least have the debate as coaches and parents. I expect from the lack of feedback (and that's not a dig) that most are happy, but if you have something you would like us to act on, please shout. One thing I would bear in mind as you think on this, is that I believe our progress as a team is a lot down to "consistency and continuity" and doing the basics well - if we make a lot of moves, we should also think about the risks to these values. I do think that nearly all the kids seem to be really happy with their positions and what we are doing, but that's not to say they are not a little shy about raising their hand! For what it's worth, I don't think it would be feasible to accomodate complete change if all kids / parents wanted to do so, it would be chaos if we did! But I do want to hear your thoughts and happy to discuss on an individual basis with parents or children.

Sun 21st: Home v Farnham

Big well done to everyone for excellent all round performances against Farnham on Sunday. To put this into context, Farnham is one of our traditional hammerings as a club, and talking to one or two of the coaches on Sunday, it was business-as-usual for most. We have never competed well in our age group against them, and for information, they have NEVER lost a festival they have competed in at this age group!

So:
* Our A team lost 0-2 to their A, beat their B 4-1, then drew with their A 1-1 (and they cut the game short when we were on top
* Our B team lost 1-3 to their A, beat their B 3-2, then beat their C 4-2.

So as you can see we really stood up well to their A team, then beat all the rest!

A couple of points;
* Winning isn't everything, but I'm delighted (as are all the coaches) that we have come on so much and are really competing with the best
* I am more pleased that we have real balance in our squads - if you look at the scores, we have real strength in depth and it is great that we don't have a real gap between teams, far from it (unlike Farnham and a few others who have a strong preference for A and B!

Re: Training. you will have seen from Pippa's note that Wed night training is on hold until end Feb. As well as it being cold and miserable, there is just too much uncertainty at the moment due to pitch conditions etc., and I want to maintain the momentum with the kids - constant disruption and cancellation leads to disappointment, which I want to try and avoid for now.

Curtain Raiser Cup - Saturday 9th

What a fantastic day! I think I'm just beginning to come back down....!

For the record;

2-1 win against Fordingbridge (coming back from 0-1 down at half time)
0-1 loss to Ealing Trailfinders (fantastic performance, perhaps the best of the day - and we could so easily have won - we at least deserved the draw!)
4-0 win over Edenbridge (and it could have been a couple more)

We managed not to lose any of our 18 "stars" on the day (I'm assuming everyone got home ok!) so many many thanks to Bev for organising - great job - once we hear back from Quins (mid-week?), we'll let everyone know what's next. It's not entirely clear if we are through rto the next round or not, but if we are, here's looking forward to another great day out!

Also big thanks to all the parents who turned up and cheered the kids on yesterday - the smiles on their little faces at the end were unbelievable!!

Great news!! I have talked to Nick Hyde the Community Development Officer at Harlequins and he is happy to relax the squad numbers for us for the Curtain Raiser Cup....!!! This means that if you have registered interest, you are in!! (I think he would be a little worried if we turned up with a squad of 26, but at the moment I reckon we are heading for 15 - 20).

Unfortunately, we can still only put 9 on the field at any one time!!

Availability and Selection

Dear Parents,

I'm going to start sending a note out on a Wednesday to all parents, asking about availability (of kids) for the following Sunday.

Reason for doing this is simply for myself and the other coaches to be able to preselect the teams / squads by the weekend in preparation for Sunday(s). It's increasingly difficult to do it on a Sunday, especially when we are trying to rotate players, sometimes move positions, and try different combinations.

If we don't hear back from you by the Thursday pm, then we will assume your little darling is not available and therefore he/she will need to slot in wherever there is a gap on the day....

Hope you all appreciate how this will help us move the coaching forward.

It's not hard to find. Down the A3 til you get to that big flyover that spins off left then up and over the road you're travelling on, then more or less straight on for a couple of miles.

Team work

Despite the torrential rain at times, the boys had a great time at the Cobham festival. They were all genuinely disappointed when the cancellation was announced. Not sure if the same can be said of most parents though...

Sunday 1st October - Cobham festival
Simon and Rob took training today at Watchetts (thanks guys) and by all accounts the kids who turned up in the rain and trained did a fantastic job! Everyone practised tackling, scrummaging, rucking and mauling and made a great effort, even when it poured down! Well done and great effort!

The rest of the squad travelled to Cobham for the Cobham A festival. We played Teddington in our first match and lost by 4 scores, then went down to Sutton and Epsom in our second by 3. This only tells half the story as this festival is traditionally the toughest of the season, and last year, we were soundly trounced by these teams by many more than this! On Sunday we competed fantastically well in all areas of play. Sure we made some mistakes but if we were to iron out 1 or 2 things, we were well in these matches with very little in it. Teddington went on to lose a very close semi final to Cobham A (one of the best teams in the area) and S&E beat Reeds to go through to the final.

Unfortunately for all concerned the festival had to be abandoned before the finals could be played. In fact we were warming up for the final of the Plate Competition against Tunbridge Wells when play was firstly suspended for a half hour before being cancelled completely! A real shame, but understandable in the circumstances - it was becoming impossible to play through the driving rain, and safety was becoming an issue, with waterlogged pitches (and the odd fork of lightning across the skies!)

The kids did really really really well and we can push on from here. Everybody should be proud of the effort and commitment - please remember to support them between sessions and make them feel good about how much they have achieved.

Thanks to all the parents for coming down in the rain and supporting us. When I look at other teams, I do think we have all round one of the best groups, having a good balance of support and encouragement from the sidelines....

To round of my rather "soggy" day, I managed not to avoid the whistle for the 1st time in 4 years and had to ref a match between Teddington and S&E.... very competitive (and that's just the coaches and parents ) and (very) not fun.... here's hoping I don't need to do again too soon!

Training as usual on Wednesday and Sunday.

The Camberley festival on the 15th October

We are going to need people to help out with the following:

- 3 pitch marshalls whose job it is to track which matches have been played on their pitch and keep the scores on a sheet.

- 2 touch judges to run the line and raise a flag if anyone steps on or over it

- 2 people to help with car parking at the start of the festival (approx 9am til just after 10)

- 1 person to monitor littering (visions of Parkie from the early issues of Viz spring to mind) and make sure someone picks up the black bin liners at the end of the day

General Admin

I have most membership and medical forms in now, but would be grateful if anyone who has not already done so could get them into me before the Camberley Festival so that we can play as many players as possible.

If you haven't previously completed an RFU membership form along with 2 photos (many of you did this last year), please grab a form from me at your earliest convenience. They are free, just need 2 passport sized photos.

For those of you who already submitted RFU forms, I am actively chasing details of exactly whose forms are in process to see if I can find any of ours. I'll let you know if I come up with anything .....

Everyone else should attend training at Watchetts, usual time, which will be run by Simon and Jo (and Rob?) - Andy and I will be at Cobham. If you are able and willing to help Simon with training on Sunday please let me know.

I've been asked by a few parents what their child needs to do to get their certificate and be in a position to play against other clubs. The gaps are mostly around scrummaging, rucking and mauling, which we will do again tonight and on Sunday. Where there are gaps against tackling, it's more that the coaches between them either have not seen the child carry out the skill in a game environment, or they have not shown the skill to a satisfactory level in a coaching session. Either way, we will be going over the basics again and again over the coming weeks, and I'm confident with a few more sessions, everyone will be where we need them to be...

Camberley v Cobham - 1st Oct 06

I'd like everyone at Cobham on Sunday for 0915. Registration is at 0930 and first game is usually at 10.00. My experience of these festivals is that they can run on to around 3pm depending on progress.

Points to note:
A) make sure the kids have plenty of fluids and some food with them (I would avoid burgers etc on the day until we have finished playing. Light sandwiches, fruit etc make more sense)
B) bring layers of clothing - they need to stay warm and dry between matches - this will be your responsibility
C) Make sure they pack gumshields - no gumshield, no play
D) pls check their studs, and if in any doubt replace them. they need to have proper rugby studs in their - most shops supply them and they are a few quid.
E) cost is £6 per player for the festival. Pls make sure you pay Rob at some point - I don't do collections!

Camberley v Kingston, 3-0 - 24th Sep 06

Camberley Under 9's made a fantastic start to the 2006/07 season last weekend with an emphatic 3-0 victory over a strong running Kingston side. All the skills the U9's have been working on in training since late August were evident for all to see on Sunday; good support play, safe handling and passing, but perhaps most satisfying of all was the tremendous defence in all areas of the pitch and by all team members. At no point on Sunday did it look as if Kingston would breach the Camberley defence.... tackle after tackle flew in, and even if one tackle was missed, the stunning support meant that another defender was there to step in and snuff out any threat.

Blake scored two tries with his typical strong, powerful running, as we have come to expect. For both his tries he picked up the ball deep, with plenty of work to do, but with gritted teeth and determination he chose "route 1" and powered up the field, bursting through Kingston tackles with excellent body position and aggressive running. Giles rounded off a great day of attack, when he also picked up the ball deep and then, in typical Giles fashion, dodged and jinked past 4 or 5 tackles before touching down in the corner. The great thing to see for all 3 tries was that there was always 2 or 3 supporting runners, should Blake or Giles have been tackled - something that the U9's will look to build on in future weeks.

As said the tackling was excellent throughout - one particular tackle from James Evans in the middle of the park sent a Kingston centre crashing to the deck with a resounding "thud"!. The drive and passion up front with the forwards "in the trenches" meant that Kingston could hardly get their hands on the ball.

It was a thoroughly excellent day out and a great effort from the kids. Cobham festival is on the horizon which, be in no doubt, will be a huge step up in oposition. But Camberley can progress to the next stage of development with some confidence after this victory

Getting to grips with Contact rugby

We started back this season on Sunday 3rd September.
All the lads have been working hard on all the new contact training we have to do for the first time - last year we did tag rubgy. This year we're starting to learn Rucking & Mauling!
